The Brief

Hampta Pass is one of Himachal Pradesh’s most dramatic crossover treks, taking you from the green mountains around Manali into the stark, high-altitude landscape of Lahaul. What makes this trek special is not just the pass itself—it’s the remarkable transformation of the landscape within a few days.

You begin your journey surrounded by pine forests, open grasslands, streams and the wide valleys of Himachal. As you climb higher, the scenery gradually becomes more rugged, with rocky mountains, glacial terrain and high-altitude valleys. Crossing Hampta Pass feels like stepping through a natural doorway from one side of the Himalayas to another.

🥾 HAMPTA PASS TREK ITINERARY

Day 01 — Manali → Jobra → Chika

Drive: Manali to Jobra
Trek: Jobra → Chika

The adventure begins with a drive from Manali towards Jobra, the usual starting point of the trek. From here, the trail enters the forest and follows the river towards Chika. The first day is relatively short and gives you time to settle into the mountain environment.

Overnight: Chika Camp

Day 02 — Chika → Balu Ka Ghera

Trek: Approximately 8–9 km
Duration: Around 5–6 hours

The trail gradually leaves the dense forest behind and opens into wider mountain landscapes. You’ll cross streams, walk through meadows and follow the river deeper into the valley.

As the altitude increases, the surroundings become more rugged and the massive Himalayan walls begin to dominate the landscape.

Overnight: Balu Ka Ghera Camp

Day 03 — Balu Ka Ghera → Hampta Pass → Shea Goru

Trek: Approximately 14 km
Duration: Around 8–10 hours

This is the most challenging and exciting day of the trek.

The trail climbs steadily towards Hampta Pass, with the terrain becoming steeper and more exposed. After reaching the pass, you’ll be rewarded with expansive mountain views before beginning the descent towards the Lahaul side.

The scenery changes dramatically as the green landscapes disappear and the dry, rocky mountains of Lahaul appear.

Overnight: Shea Goru Camp

Day 04 — Shea Goru → Chatru → Chandratal

Trek/Drive: Depending on conditions and itinerary

After leaving Shea Goru, the trail/route continues towards Chatru. From here, the journey can continue by road towards Chandratal Lake, subject to road conditions, weather and local restrictions.

Surrounded by towering mountains, Chandratal is one of the most beautiful stops in the region and a fitting finale to the crossover experience.

Overnight: Chatru / Chandratal area, depending on itinerary

Day 05 — Chatru → Manali

Drive: Approximately 4–6 hours, depending on road conditions

After breakfast, begin the return journey towards Manali. The route takes you through the dramatic landscapes of Lahaul before gradually reconnecting with the greener mountains around Manali.

Trip Ends: Manali

⚠️ A Quick Reality Check

Hampta Pass is beginner-friendly but it isn’t an effortless trek. The altitude, long pass-crossing day, uneven terrain, cold nights and unpredictable Himalayan weather can make the experience physically demanding.

Good fitness, proper acclimatization, suitable trekking shoes and responsible guidance make a big difference.

Hampta Pass isn’t just about reaching a summit. It’s about watching the Himalayas transform around you—one valley, one river crossing and one mountain pass at a time
